Eleventh Meeting - ITU Headquarters, Geneva, 13-14 June 2007 |
|
The eleventh meeting of the WG-WSIS was held in Room H, in Geneva,
Switzerland starting at 14h30 on 13 June and finishing on 14 June 2007
under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr Vladimir Minkin (Russian Federation)
with Mr. Frederick Riehl (Switzerland) and Mr. Ridha Guellouz (Tunisia)
as vice-chairmen.
The work of WG-WSIS is
guided by Resolution 140 but the Group was also invited to consider and
discuss the different activities of the ITU Secretary-General and
Bureaux in relation to the implementation of Resolution 102.
The World Summit on
Information Society (WSIS) noted that the core competencies of ITU in the
field of ICTs are of crucial importance for building the information society (Geneva
Declaration of Principles, para 64).
In this regard,
PP-06 endorsed
the relevant work already undertaken and/or to be carried out by ITU in
implementing the WSIS outcomes, under the aegis of the Council Working Group on
WSIS (WG-WSIS), requesting the Council
to maintain the WG-WSIS in order to:
-
facilitate membership input and guidance on the ITU
implementation of relevant WSIS outcomes and
-
to elaborate proposals to the Council that may be necessary
for adapting ITU to its role in building the information society. (Res.
140)

Tenth Meeting - ITU Headquarters, Geneva, 12-13 September 2006 |
|
The tenth meeting of WG-WSIS was held from 12 to 13 September 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland, under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr Vladimir Minkin (Russian Federation). The WG-WSIS agreed the text of a
final report (PP-06/11 Rev. 1), including two draft resolutions, which will now be forwarded to the additional session of the 2006 Council ahead of the Plenipotenriary Conference.
The Council invited the WG-WSIS to continue its work in line with
Resolution 113
(Marrakesh, 2002) and to monitor the implementation of the
World Summit on the Information Society Outcomes
and ITU’s adaptation to the Information Society in order to finalize
preparation, based on inputs of the Member States and Sector Members, as well as
those of the Secretary‑General and the elected officials and submit a final
report to PP-06 to the final meeting of Council in November 2006 on:

ITU’s actions in implementing the WSIS outcomes, detailed by
Sectors, as well as overall;
-
how ITU should further adapt itself to the Information
Society and the changing telecommunication environment including, for
example, any amendments to the ITU Constitution and Convention, in
accordance with Resolution 114;
The Council also invited the WG-WSIS to continue to monitor
ITU’s contribution to, and leading role in, the multi-stakeholder implementation
of the WSIS outcomes, as well as its contribution to the work of the Internet
Governance Forum.
The meeting was conducted in English only.

Ninth Meeting - ITU Headquarters, Geneva, 2-3 February 2006 |
In light of the
World Summit on the Information Society Outcomes, the 9th meeting of the
Council WG-WSIS was held at ITU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland,
starting on the afternoon of the 2nd of February and continuing on the 3rd of
February 2006, to discuss their implications for ITU’s role in WSIS
implementation and follow-up.
Furthermore, WG-WSIS is tasked with reporting to the 2006 session of the Council
with proposals on ITU actions and ITU adaptation to the Information Society.
The meeting was preceded, on 30-31 January, by a meeting of working group on
the elaboration of the draft
ITU Strategic
and Financial Plans for 2008-2011, as well as other meetings of the
ITU Council Oversight Group (NCOG)
and Council Group on
Financial Regulations (FinRegs) and a special
meeting on ITU Reform
that was held on 1 February 2006 at ITU Headquarters.
The meeting took place in room H and was conducted in English only.
The outcomes of the ninth meeting are contained in the
Report on Work of Council Working Group on WSIS (WGIG-WSIS) as well as in
the
Report of Council 2006 to Plenipotentiary 2006 on activities of Council Working
Group on WSIS (WGIG-WSIS) between 2002 and 2006.

Eighth Meeting - CCV, Geneva, 3-4 May 2005 |
|
The 8th meeting of the ITU Council Working on the World Summit
on the Information Society (WG-WSIS) was held on 3-4 May 2005, and was preceded by two meetings.
The first of these meetings,
of
the ITU-T Resolution
46 Group, provided the WG-WSIS with a definition relevant to the technical aspects
of the telecommunication networks used by the Internet. The second meeting entitled "Informal Consultations on WSIS
Implementation Mechanism" took place in Room
C2 of the ITU Headquarters in Geneva.
The 8th meeting agreed on the text of a draft report to Council, which
incorporates as annexes document 4,5,6,12 and 16 below.

Thematic Meeting on Countering Spam from 7 to 9 July 2004, in Geneva,
Switzerland. The outcome of this meeting have been submitted to the PrepCom
process, after having being considered by the WG-WSIS. The Chairman's

Sixth Meeting - ITU Headquarters, Geneva, 7 (14h30) and 8 June 2004 |
The sixth meeting of the Council WG-WSIS was held at ITU Headquarters
in Geneva on 7-8 June 2004. The agenda for the meeting and the

Fifth Meeting - Geneva, 25 February 2004 |
In the light of the results of the first phase of
the World Summit on the Information Society, a meeting of the Council WG-WSIS
was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 25 February 2004, just ahead of
the Internet Governance Workshop,
to discuss the future role of the ITU in the process and in the implementation
of the Declaration of Principles and Action Plan. Further information about

Fourth Meeting - Madeira, Portugal, 10-11 September 2003 |
The
fourth meeting of the Council Working Group on WSIS was held in Madeira,
Portugal, on 10 and 11 September 2003, following
the CEPT Plenary Assembly.
Council
Res. 1207
(TIES),
instructing the Secretary General and the Directors of the Bureaux to perform
a “stock-taking exercise” and prepare an analysis paper, to show how ITU’s
current work programme contributes to the fulfillment of the objectives outlined
in the WSIS draft action plan. The paper is now available HERE.

Third Meeting - Geneva, 14-15 April 2003 |
The
Working Group held its third meeting on 14-15 April 2003 in
Geneva, Switzerland. The Report

Second Meeting - Lisbon, Portugal, 11-13 December 2002 |
The
Working Group held its second meeting on 11-13 December 2002 in Lisbon. The invitation letter
(ref. DM-1287) was sent to ITU Member States and Sector Members on 27 November 2002.

First Meeting - Marrakesh, Morocco, 21 September 2002 |
At the Plenipotentiary Conference, the fundamental role of
ITU in providing a global perspective in regard to the Information
Society was recognized by Member States, which also stressed the importance
of ITU as an active and relevant contributor to the WSIS process (Res.
PLEN/7).The Plenipotentiary Conference invited the Council Working
Group on WSIS to see to it that ITU makes a contribution to the second meeting
of WSIS PrepCom in February 2003 comprising proposals for ITU
substantive input, including to the WSIS declaration of principles and
action plan (Dec. PLEN/1).
The Working Group held its first
meeting on 21 September 2002 and adopted a report that was submitted to the last
meeting of the 2002 Council in Marrakesh.

The Council noted the Working Group Chairman's report and
requested that it be presented to the ITU Plenipotentiary
Conference (Marrakesh,
2002) and serve as a basis for an in-depth discussion on ITU's substantive
contribution to WSIS.
