Measuring the Information Society: Progress to Date and Challenges Ahead

New York, United Sates of America, UNHQ, Conference Room A, Tuesday 15 December 2015

Background

“If governments and international agencies are to grasp fully the opportunities provided by the information Society, they need to have a better quantitative and qualitative understanding of developments on both supply and demand sides of communications.”

Implementing WSIS Outcomes: A Ten-Year Review, CSTD Secretariat, 2015

Measuring the information society is necessary to evaluate progress with regard to the WSIS targets, existing ICT-related policies, as well as towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ICTs are cross-cutting enablers of development and are critical to the achievement of the SDGs. ICT indicators can also help monitor achievements in other areas included in the SDGs, such as poverty reduction, education, economic growth and inclusive societies. The Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development has identified a set of relevant and existing ICT indicators that can help monitor the proposed SDGs. In this side event, representatives of the Partnership and other experts will discuss progress to date and challenges ahead related to the measuring of the Information Society.
