A CONTRIBUTION FROM THE FIRST REGIONAL EVENT

The participants in the first regional event Accessible Americas:Information and Communication for ALL, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 12 – 14 November 2014, proposed a set of guidelines including principles and actions needed to support implementation of ICT accessibility in the Americas Region. They have identified principles to guide all relevant stakeholders to support ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities to ensure more inclusive societies. This important contribution has been presented by the Brazilian Delegation to the International Conference “From Exclusion to Empowerment – The Role of Information and Communication Technologies for Persons with Disabilities”, carried out in New Delhi, from 24 to 26 November 2014, organized by UNESCO in cooperation with the Government of India.

ABOUT

This event aims at moving discussions from identification of principles to implementation of practices on how stakeholders from the Americas Region can ensure that accessible ICTs and assistive technologies are widely available to persons with disabilities (PwD) and can be used to safeguard and exercise their rights, considering equality and affordability. This event will further focus on the importance of ICTs to empower PwD emphasizing that through cooperation, development of tools, capacity building and the development of policies and strategies it is possible to remove barriers and enable human development and social inclusion. A Regional Proposal on best practices that can be replicated by countries of the Americas to increase the conditions for PwD and improve their development and social inclusion is one of the main expected outcomes of the event. The event will be conducted in Spanish and English.

PURPOSE

Identify best practices that can be replicated by the countries in the Americas region and encourage governments, industry and other stakeholders to replicate these practices and to promote ICT accessibility in order to create fair and equal opportunities for PwD and support a regional disability-inclusive development agenda that will contribute to the emerging post-2015 global development agenda by treating ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities as a cross-cutting development issue.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The event is addressed to interested and active stakeholders from all segments directly or indirectly involved with the issue of ICT accessibility for People with Disability.
