The history of ITS goes back to the 1960s and 1970s when researchers tried to solve the problems of traffic congestion with the help of large central computers and communications systems.  Despite the rapid and global uptake of information and communication technologies ITS deployment lags far behind. This session will set the stage for the workshop by giving an overview of current ITS deployment, related regulatory frameworks and standardization activities.
