Hands-on session on AI tools on hydrometeorological hazards—from fires to floods, (Plenary Hall 400 + Breakout Rooms 311, 312)
This session bridges innovation and standardization through hands-on activities. After opening presentations from the UPU and Manteo-ai, participants will build an AI pipeline and explain its sequence. The following activity will focus on model development; through a series of hidden images and iterative clues about their content, we will discover the concept of feature classification. Participants will explore how AI-based classification supports disaster risk reduction (DRR) and discuss related challenges.
Two parallel activities will then follow: one will guide participants in creating a random forest model and developing a decision tree capable of predicting disasters. The other will use a roleplay to explore AI applications during floods. The session will conclude with a review of how international standards ensure responsible and interoperable AI use.
Opening Remarks:
-
Soichiro Yasukawa, Chief of the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

From theory and prototype to real-world action and capacity building (Plenary Hall 400 + Breakout Rooms 311, 312)
This capacity-building workshop will bring participants together to explore how AI can move from promising concepts and prototypes toward practical, scalable use in disaster preparedness. Through hands-on group work and a brief LEGO® Serious Play® exercise, participants will work with three illustrative case studies at European, national, and local levels, identifying key challenges, enablers, and concrete actions needed to advance AI adoption for disaster preparedness.
