How can information and communication technology (ICT) be utilized to
create a fully inclusive Smart Society? With focus on enabling the smart society and developing smart cities, the aim of
ITU-D Study Group Question 1/2: “Creating smart cities and society: Employing ICTs for sustainable social and economic development" is to advance sustainable socio-economic development through strategic use of ICTs.
All areas of society are impacted by the digital revolution. Technological advances and progressing digital transformation affect culture, education, government, health, transport, trade and tourism, transforms services, making them more efficient, and creating employment and business opportunities. ICT applications can support sustainable development in public administration, business, education and training, health, the environment, agriculture and science within the framework of national digital strategies. Delivering the promise of the smart society relies on three technological pillars: connectivity, smart devices and software, and sustainable development principles.
The study group focuses on the discussion of identification of best practice and assistance in raising awareness on methods of improving connectivity to support the smart society, including connectivity to support smart grids, smart cities and ICT applications in public administration, transport, business, education and training, health, the environment, agriculture and science.
