Seychelles

Country status
In 2022, Seychelles ranked as the second largest generator of e-waste per capita in Africa, with an average of 13.5 kilograms of e-waste generated per capita. The Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) of Seychelles is currently exploring opportunities to regulate the country’s ICT equipment sector through the environmental policy principle of extended producer responsibility (EPR).

Seychelles, like other island States, has experienced an increase in resource extraction and waste generation in recent decades, facing growing challenges in the context of vulnerabilities to pollution risks from hazardous chemicals and waste. With limited national production capacity of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), Seychelles depends almost entirely on imported products for consumption. Coupled with limited waste management infrastructure, the country is experiencing challenges in sustainably regulation e-waste management. There is currently no legally binding instrument in place for e-waste management, even though some peripheral laws do refer to EEE.
