Background:

ITU is providing technical assistance to the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) of the Government of Seychelles to draft a priority plan for the ICT sector towards the establishment of policy and regulatory frameworks for e-waste in Seychelles.

Seychelles, like other island states, has experienced an increase in resource extraction and waste generation in recent decades, while at the same time facing growing challenges in the context of vulnerabilities to pollution risks from hazardous chemicals and waste. With limited national production capacity of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), Seychelles depends almost entirely on imported products for consumption. Coupled with limited waste management infrastructure the country is experiencing challenges in sustainably regulating e-waste management.

The focus of ITU’s technical assistance is to convene relevant public and private sector ICT stakeholders from Seychelles and gather inputs towards defining policy and regulatory recommendations in Seychelles, whilst also facilitating capacity building and knowledge exchange.

Objectives:
This in-person workshop will take place over two days, gathering relevant public and private sector stakeholders to raise awareness and propose recommendations for coherent policy and regulatory approaches on e-waste from the ICT sector. Its objectives are:

    • To share knowledge and experience among ICT stakeholders concerning the challenges associated with sustainably managing e-waste from the ICT sector.
    • To gather inputs (e.g. legal, financial and administrative) from the ICT sector towards the development of policy and regulatory recommendations for the environmentally sound management of e-waste from the ICT sector in Seychelles.
