As digital technologies rapidly transform societies, their role in shaping environmental sustainability has become both critical and complex. WSIS Action Line C7 on e-environment addresses this dual challenge through three priorities: leveraging ICTs for environmental protection, promoting sustainable ICT lifecycles, and strengthening disaster risk reduction through digital monitoring systems.
The rise of technologies such as AI, big data, and IoT offers unprecedented opportunities to advance sustainability, yet also introduces new environmental risks that remain insufficiently addressed in global frameworks and digital strategies. While initiatives like the Global Digital Compact recognize the need to harness digital innovation responsibly, stronger alignment and concrete action are urgently needed.
In this context, UNEP, ITU, and WMO are convening a session at the
World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2026 Forum to drive dialogue, strengthen coordination, and advance a shared vision for a sustainable and environmentally responsible digital future under Action Line C7 on e-environment.
