Government Consultation Workshop on the National Policy on the Management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment in Malawi, 26 – 27 April 2021, Nkopola, Malawi

Background
In response to the mounting challenge of managing Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Malawi, national stakeholders convened for a series of workshops from 26–30 April 2021 in Lilongwe. These consultations aimed to advance the development of a National Policy and Strategy on E-Waste Management. Held in April 2021, the consultations gathered government stakeholders to revisit the recommendations of the 2020 consultations and engage newly identified institutions in discussions. Participants worked to shape key components of the national policy, particularly around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), stakeholder roles, and the preparation of private sector engagement.

Objectives

The Government Consultation Workshop was the first consultation workshop of a series of meetings designed to consolidate stakeholder consensus on Malawi's National E-Waste Management Policy and strengthen the foundation for its effective implementation. The specific objectives of the workshop with government stakeholders were to:

  • Involve institutions identified during the 2020 pre-consultations in the national policy development process.
  • Reflect on and refine key elements of the national e-waste policy, including policy objectives and stakeholder mapping.
  • Begin shaping the structure and content of a private sector consultation workshop to be held later in 2021.
