ITU's 160 anniversary

Committed to connecting the world

Connect a School, Connect a Community

The Connect a School, Connect a Community (CSCC) was an ITU initiative designed to promote broadband Internet connectivity for schools worldwide, so that schools could serve as community ICT centres for rural, marginal urban and isolated areas with a particular focus on disadvantaged and vulnerable groups such as women and girls, indigenous people, persons with disabilities and youth and children. The initiative seeked to promote understanding and awareness among relevant government officials and agencies of the need for coordinated policies, regulations and practices to promote school connectivity in order to meet the WSIS targets of connecting all primary, secondary and tertiary schools to ICT by 2015.

The on-line toolkit encompassed five modules in all 6 UN languages that provided policy advice and best practices related to all layers of the school connectivity ecosystem as well as training materials to be used by community ICT centres.

In 2012 two of the ITU Connect a School, Connect a Community (CSCC) modules were updated: “Polices and regulation to promote school connectivity” and “Disseminating low-cost computing devices in schools” to ensure that the evolution of the countries in terms of policies applied for increasing school connectivity as well as the technological developments in the last years (e.g. m-learning, smart phones, tablets) are reflected as appropriate. The updates also aim to make available a broad international perspective including best practices in both areas. (See executive summary for the updated Module1 and Module2)
