Oviedo Emprende celebrates the International Girls in ICT Day, on Thursday 28th April at the Vivarium, the Health Sciences Business Incubator, located in Oviedo, Asturias (Spain).

Oviedo Emprende and CTIC Technology Centre will organize a seminar, with the participation of students from Pando secondary school in Oviedo. The seminar will also include a round table with Asturian women technologists, who are working in the IT sector in different fields.

Schoolgirls of this secondary school will host and moderate this event. They will introduce participants and lead the roundtable discussion, which will focus on the under-representation of women in a sector, which is in constant growth, generates employment and requires talent.

Throughout the event, participants will identify the barriers in the access of girls and young women to technical studies and jobs in the technology sector; they will seek the elimination of gender stereotypes and increase awareness of the role of women in technology fields.

Women participating in this seminar are:

  • Aurora Barrero. President of Astur Valley and Dean of the Professional Association of Graduates in Engineering and Computer Engineering of Asturias.
  • María C. Saornil, Telecommunications Engineer and Head of the Computer Vision Area at CTIC Technology Centre.

Challenge for students of Education Centers
On the other hand and on the occasion of this celebration, a challenge has been proposed to students of the Asturian educational centers: the realization of a work in digital format that shows Asturian women working in the IT sector: programmers and developers, IT consultants, managers of technology projects, researchers, communication managers, designers, etc.

These works can be infographics, videos, presentations, content on websites, etc.  They should show Asturian women working in the IT sector, including information on the type of work they carry out, the entity where they work, the skills they have or any other information they consider appropriate.
Each education center will forward the works done by its students, before Tuesday 26th April, to the email account comunicacion@oviedoemprende.es, including the link to the website where the content has been uploaded, the attached files or links to the downloadable content.

Contact: Luisa Maria Paz (CTIC Techology Center) 634 57 20 53.

The best works received will be shown during the Day of Girls in ICT and will be published on the Oviedo Emprende website, linking from the website of the Oviedo City Council.
