On the occasion of the International Girls in ICT Day, Republic of Serbia and Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications organized celebration on 28th April 2016 in Belgrade. State Secretary, Ms. Tatjana Matić opened the meeting. She said that 90 percent of girls in school age, expressed ability to ICT but small number of them opt for this area later on. "Research shows that the most wanted list of occupations in Serbia by far dominates the IT profession. Current demand in Serbia is around 30,000 jobs. It is therefore necessary to motivate girls to be already in the course of their education, rather opt for the new technology, "said Matic. Pointing to the huge employment potential of the sector, she stated that it ICT sector has the greatest employment potential and that it is therefore necessary to motivate girls to assert themselves in this area. Girls in ICT Day 2016 was held in the exhibition area of the art pavilion "Cvijeta Zuzorić", where all selected photos (on the theme "Digitally creative") that these female students sent us, was shown. Best of them was rewarded. 70 female students from 4 elementary schools attended the meeting. They were addressed by successful women in the sector of ICT, education, activism and entrepreneurship. Those female leaders present them employment opportunities in ICT field, and encourage girls to think about their future in the ICT sector and other areas where the use of information technology will be key to the development of their careers. This event is being marked in our country with the aim of bringing ICT closer to young women and presenting them with the employment opportunities in this field, as well as to encourage girls to think about their future in the ICT sector and other areas where the use of information technology will be key to the development of their careers. Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications marked International Girls in ICT Day within the "IT Ladies" as a part of a national campaign "SMART & SAFE" initiative to promote ICT sector.

We would like to emphasize that the initiative marking the day which is dedicated to motivating young women to opt for a career in the field of information and communication technologies, engineering and science came from the Republic of Serbia, and the proposal was accepted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2010.
