Alfa (managed by Orascom Telecom)
Beirut, Lebanon, 2014, May 08
In line with the "Girls in ICT Day" initiative launched and backed by International Telecommunication Union, Lebanese mobile operator Alfa, managed by Orascom Telecom, celebrated this Day for the 2nd year in a row, inviting 25 female students from secondary classes to its premises in mid-May.
This celebration coincides with the objectives of the "Girls in ICT Day", and came as part of Alfa's commitment to contributing to the career guidance of the female students and to enhancing the role of women in the telecommunications sector, which contributes around 9% to the local GDP.
After concluding a series of educational shadowing activities, through a detailed introduction to Alfa's technology departments and network operative systems, the event was followed by live interactions with Alfa women employees and managers in related departments, which introduced the girls to the daily work flow in the company. The event concluded with a game competition in which these young girls were asked to come up with ideas for smartphone applications that could make society a better place for all. This competition aimed at showing the girls how technology, coupled with creativity, can be leveraged towards benefiting the community.
Through education, training, fun and interactive competitions, Alfa has taken another step into bringing young girls closer to their careers in ICT.
