The girls of Linden were treated to an exciting Tech Day Camp on the 9th April 2014. The NFMU visited the region and allowed over 250 girls to interact with leading female ICT professionals and have hands on experience with varying aspects of ICTs.

The event featured presentations by leading female ICT professionals, a Q&A segment and interactive booths which featured various aspects of ICTs:

  • Networking and Computer Repairs
  • Algorithm & Program Development
  • Graphic & Web Design
  • ICTs 4 Development
  • Cyber Security

Girls were stimulated by the presentations of the ICT professionals. They were interested in the advantages and disadvantages of technology. Further they were excited to know what the careers of the ICT professionals entail.

The participants were encouraged to like the "Girls in ICT Guyana" Facebook page and post questions and comments all year round.

At the booths girls were amazed at the power of programs such as Photoshop. They were surprised at how easy it was to do basic binary conversion and before leaving the booths were capable of converting any base 10 numbers to binary.

There were some male students in the audience. The boys were encouraged to support and motivate females in their lives to join the ICT revolution.

Members of the team made note of the queries and in applicable cases pointed participants to online resources that could be helpful to them.

Both students and teachers were interested in developing programming skills as it is now a compulsory field in the CSEC examination.

In her address the Regional Education Officer succinctly summarized the intentions of the Tech Day Camps: "Today is a ground-breaking day in Region 10, today is the day when we will change the face of ICT in the region"
