11th annual WSIS Prizes: Meet the 2022 winners

For the past decade, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum has shone a spotlight on information and communication technology (ICT) success stories from around the globe.

The annual WSIS Prizes aim to highlight examples of sustainable ICT applications and use cases that communities anywhere in the world can replicate.

Projects are selected based on how well they demonstrate the ability of ICTs to accelerate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The award categories, aligned with official WSIS “action lines”, range from ICT infrastructure to education to e-government and security.

2022 WSIS Prizes winners

1. The role of governments and all stakeholders in the promotion of ICTs for development – Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture Implementation, Planning Department of the State of Meghalaya, India

2. Information and communication infrastructure – Free WiFi for All in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas in Western Mindanao, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Philippines

3. Access to information and knowledge – Targeted poverty alleviation management based on GIS and location big data analysis, China Mobile Communications Group, Liaoning, China

4. Capacity building – Development of women’s entrepreneurship and information technology skills, Tumaris.Tech IT Park, Uzbekistan

5. Building confidence and security in the use of ICTs – Cyber safety programme, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Qatar

6. Enabling environment – Construction of the 2030 Digital Agenda, Ministry of the Presidency, Dominican Republic

8. Cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and local content – Art and technology for climate change and green social entrepreneurship, GEM Institute, Lesotho

9. Media – COVID-19 radio response, Farm Radio International, Canada

10. Ethical dimensions of the information society – Apprise Audit, United Nations University

11. International and regional cooperation – ASEAN Data management framework and model contractual clauses for cross border data flows, Infocomm Media Development Authority, Singapore

The WSIS Prizes are an integral part of the WSIS Stocktaking process, coordinated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as mandated by the United Nations General Assembly since 2004.
