The following set of draft 5G country profiles seek to provide a clearer picture on the status of 5G implementation in non-EU countries of Europe region. As the EU moves ahead in a relatively harmonized way in terms of 5G development, non-EU countries of Europe region which are proceeding relatively independently risk not benefitting of appropriate monitoring.
As a matter of fact, more than 1/3 of Europe Region population is from non-EU countries of Europe region (242,205,014 million people).[1] Hence, the weight of these countries’ for 5G development in the region. Although each country has its own specificities, the 5G country profiles seek to draw attention to the main drivers of 5G from different angles but in a structured way. In particular, each country profile includes the following sections:
1. ICT Background and current status of broadband
2. Broadband and mobile telecommunication sectors data
3. Current progress on 5G: consultations and national strategies
4. Spectrum assignment for 5G & market development
5. Electromagnetic fields levels and the implementation dynamics
6. 5G commercial launches: announcements, trail cities, and digital cross-border corridors
The country profiles were prepared within the framework of the ITU Regional Initiative for Europe on “Broadband infrastructure, broadcasting and spectrum management”. Moreover, the documents have benefitted of valuable feedback and inputs from government ministries or national regulatory authorities in charge of ICTs.
Note: Version 1.1 of these documents are an advanced draft for possible additional inputs, comments, feedback. The final versions of the documents is planned to be released after the ITU Regional Forum for Europe.
