IARU & FMRE on Emergency Telecommunications

With the cooperation of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and the “Federacion Mexicana de Radio Experimentadores”(FMRE, ITU implemented the Pilot project for the use of ICT for in emergencies and disasters in the Americas region. The project was implemented in 7 countries from 2018 to 2019 in the region (Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama). The project implemented the technology solution known as WINKINK (www.winlink.org), developed and maintained by IARU with a proven track record of success in various emergencies. The project is a reality thanks to the commitment of the ITU with its member States on the topic and the willingness to cooperate of the Federación Mexicana de Radio Experimentadores (FMRE), the International Union of Radio Amateur (IARU) and Comisión Técnica Regional de Telecomunicaciones (COMTELCA).

The initiative created a similar project (2020-2021) for 7 additional countries: Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Financial Inclusion

BDT is implementing a 3-year project to harness the potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to strengthen Digital Financial Services (DFS) and Digital Financial Inclusion (DFI) in China, Egypt and Mexico.  Within this context, ITU-D raised awareness on the enabling environment for Financial Inclusion in Mexico through the preparation of a draft country assessment report on Digital Financial Inclusion.​ The project built a map to geolocalise banking services, wireless coverage and other data. Take a look here

Facebook on Gender Digital Inclusion

ITU is implementing the project "Overcoming Barriers to Digital Inclusion: Americas Girls Can Code" for USD 400,000 (Jan 2021 - Dec 2022) in partnership with Facebook.

The project will facilitate an enabling environment to ensure that everyone enjoys the full benefit of telecommunication/ICT access and use, through the implementation of local/national ICT Projects to eliminate disparities in education at all levels. The main objective of this Project is to promote the development of digital skills activities in benefit of girls and young women from the Americas region in the framework of the Americas Girls Can Code initiative, with special focus on coding and other STEM related activities and provide support to beneficiary countries to review/adopt digital inclusion policies and strategies. As a pilot, the Project will be implemented in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, in collaboration with local governments and non-governmental organizations, targeting girls, young women and persons with disabilities
