African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) Regional Training of Trainers, Intermediate Courses Launch and Strategic Reflection Event

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), through its Regional Office for Africa, has been implementing the African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) in partnership with stakeholders including UN Women and the African Union Commission to equip girls and young women aged 14–25 with digital, coding, and innovation skills. Over the years, AGCCI has supported coding camps, training of trainers, and the development of digital learning content aimed at reducing the gender digital divide and encouraging girls' participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Under the project Digital Skills for the Digital Inclusion of African Girls and Youth, supported by Qualcomm ITU has further strengthened AGCCI through the development of multilingual online learning content and face-to-face bootcamp models that support practical delivery, testing of content, and peer learning among trainers. Venue will be Cameroon Telecommunications Regulatory Board (ART).
ITU proposes to organize a final one-week face-to-face regional event in December 2026. The event will serve as a capstone activity to launch two new AGCCI intermediate courses, strengthen the AGCCI network of trainers, gather structured feedback on the new course content, and facilitate strategic reflection on the future direction and sustainability of the AGCCI initiative. The event will provide an opportunity to potentially launch the AGCCI website and to connect AGCCI trainers. It will also feature an intergenerational dialogue, inviting AGCCI trainers, alumni, girls, and young women, powered by the ITU-Qualcomm project Her Digital Skills for Life.
The purpose of the event is to consolidate achievements under the project while strengthening the next phase of AGCCI implementation through curriculum enhancement, trainer readiness, partnership building, and strategic reflection.
Specific Objectives:
- Officially launch two new AGCCI intermediate courses: African Girls Can Code Initiative: Girls who innovate focusing on soft skills, and African Girls Can Code Initiative: Advanced Scratch programming focusing on technical skills.
- Train the AGCCI network of trainers on the structure, pedagogy, and delivery approach of the two new courses and collect their feedback on course relevance, flow, accessibility, and applicability.
- Provide a platform for collective brainstorming on the way forward for the AGCCI initiative, including sustainability, partnerships, scale-up, alumni engagement, and future delivery modalities.
- Possibly launch the AGCCI website as a visibility, information-sharing, and community-building platform for trainers, alumni, girls, and partners.
- Create synergies between AGCCI and the ITU-Qualcomm project Her Digital Skills for Life by including an intergenerational dialogue where girls and young women will interact with trainers, AGCCI alumni, and women role models in digital fields.
The expected outcomes of the event are:
- Two new AGCCI intermediate courses are formally introduced to the AGCCI ecosystem and positioned for rollout.
- AGCCI trainers improve their capacity to facilitate the new courses using participatory, girl-centered, and practice-oriented approaches.
- Structured trainer feedback is collected to strengthen the course content before broader implementation.
- A consolidated set of recommendations is produced on the future direction, sustainability, partnerships, and scaling strategy of AGCCI.
- The AGCCI community is further strengthened through peer learning, mentoring, alumni engagement, and cross-country exchange.
- If ready, the AGCCI website is launched and presented to stakeholders as a platform to support visibility, learning continuity, networking, and resource sharing.
- Girls and young women participating in the Her Digital Skills for Life intergenerational dialogue, gaining exposure to trainers, alumni, and digital role models, thereby strengthening inspiration, confidence, and practical pathways into STEM learning and careers.
