Burundi National E-waste Management Policy Validation Workshop, 29 June 2022, Bujumbura, Burundi

Participants to the Government Consultation Workshop on Burundi’s National E-waste Management Policy, June 2021
Background
Burundi developed a national policy for e-waste management, which was the first comprehensive policy on the topic in the country, aiming at an effective, equitable, and sustainable system that protected both human health and the environment while promoting socio-economic development.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) provided technical assistance to the Government of Burundi via the Ministère de la Communication, des Technologies de l’Information et des Médias (MCTIM) and the Agence de Régulation et Contrôle des Télécommunications (ARCT) by providing technical expertise and strengthening Burundi’s national capacity for e-waste management.

A series of in-depth consultation on the development of Burundi’s national e-waste management policy was held in 2021 to define strategies related to the roles, duties and responsibilities of actors involved in the e-waste value chain. Following consultations with the public and private sector in Burundi, this validation workshop served to present the draft National E-waste Management Policy to consulted stakeholders and validate its guiding principles against previous consultations results.

Objectives

The workshop brought together all relevant consulted stakeholders from the public and private sector to validate a draft National E-waste Management Policy in Burundi. In particular, the objectives of the workshop consisted of:

  • Presenting the entire national policy document with guidance from subject matter experts;
  • Aligning stakeholder visions towards a common understanding and definition of producers and extended producer responsibility to be embedded in the draft National E-waste Management Policy for Burundi;
  • Offering a platform to exchange ideas on the financing modalities for the e-waste management system endorsed in the draft National E-waste Management Policy, and especially on the e-waste management infrastructure and other guiding themes;
  • Ensuring that the draft National E-waste Management Policy is fit-for-purpose and encompasses elements raised throughout previous consultations with public and private sector stakeholders.
