Government Consultation Workshop on the National Strategy on E-waste Management in Botswana, 24 February 2022, Gaborone, Botswana

Background
In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), ITU has been providing assistance to the Botswana Communication Regulatory Authority (BOCRA), the Department of Waste Management and Pollution Control (DWMPC) and to Statistics Botswana on strengthening the national capacity on e-waste policy and data. This technical assistance resulted in the publication of the National E-waste Monitor 2024 for Botswana and a draft National Strategy on the Management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment in Botswana, submitted for approval by DWMPC. The objectives of the strategy are to strengthen the regulatory framework and maximize the collection efficiency, as well as develop an environmentally sound management infrastructure and network for e-waste. A series of consultation workshops was held between 2022 and 2023 towards the development of Botswana’s strategy on e-waste management.

Objectives

The government consultation workshop gathered a core group of relevant national and local stakeholders from the public sector. It provided a space to define clear roles, duties and responsibilities of national stakeholders involved in the e-waste value chain. The workshop objectives were to:

  • Provide participants with a general introduction of the e-waste challenge, a background and key policy guidance on e-waste management;
  • Provide a space for public stakeholders to discuss the e-waste situation in Botswana and map relevant stakeholders throughout the e-waste value chain;
  • Collect initial inputs towards setting up a strong basis for an e-waste strategy in Botswana.
