Building on the USTTI Emergency Telecommunications training sequence and ITU's extensive experience in the area of emergency telecommunications, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United States Telecommunication Training Institute (USTTI) jointly developed this webinar, which aimed at highlighting the role of emergency telecommunications for disaster risk reduction and management. This two-day webinar was opened to the public, and provided the opportunity for attendees to hear experts and industry leaders discuss best practices for increasing ICT resilience and capacity for saving lives and limiting the impact of natural and manmade hazards including pandemics.
This webinar took place on
15 and 16 December, 2020 from 9h00 to 12h00 EST (15h00 to 18h00 CET). Sessions on day 1 focused on ITU’s global guidelines for the development of National Emergency Telecommunication Plans, and standards and best practices, including the implementation of the Common Alerting Protocol. It also featured a case study for response to Hurricane Maria. Sessions on day 2 included an emergency telecommunications regulatory perspective from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, an examination of emergency management from both mobile and satellite associations and operators, as well as a Round-table Discussion on COVID-19 and resilient networks, focusing on how to ensure business continuity in the telecom industry.
