Trends in Telecommunication Reform 2008: Six Degrees of Sharing

Many developing countries are preparing for a second wave of regulatory reform designed to enable them to harness the promise of new technologies and participate fully in the information society. This report examines a range of innovative sharing strategies regulators can use to speed up the uptake of ICTs and promote widespread, affordable broadband access. This year's Trends focuses on "Six Degrees of Sharing", examining active and passive infrastructure sharing, open access to international capacity, business sharing, end-user sharing and regulatory sharing.

Spectrum Management System for Developing Countries (SMS4DC) – Version 3.0

The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released the third version of a harmonized, efficient, automated technical and administrative tool for spectrum management in developing countries under the brand name SMS4DC (Spectrum Management System for Developing Countries). The version 3.0 contains an upgrade to display results on Google Earth; provide links between SMS4DC and the ARGUS monitoring software of Rohde & Schwarz; the frequency allocation table approved by WRC-07 and additional enhancements to the Version 2 of the software.
SMS4DC is sold as an integrated software package on CD-ROM containing the Software, a user manual and Digital Terrain Map of the world. SMS4DC software is available in English, with the user manual in English.
No facilities of services regarding data migration or specific software support or training are included in this Publication. It may be necessary for some users to obtain assistance in order to take full advantage of SMS4DC. ITU invites users having special needs to contact BDT (bdtmail@itu.int) to discuss specific assistance possibilities.

Measuring the Information Society - The ICT Development Index

The latest edition of Measuring the Information Society features the new ITU ICT Development Index. The Index captures the level of advancement of ICTs in more than 150 countries worldwide and compares progress made between 2002 and 2007. It also measures the global digital divide and examines how it has developed in recent years. The report also features a new ICT Price Basket, which combines fixed, mobile and broadband tariffs for 2008 into one measure and compares it across countries. The analytical report is complemented by a series of statistical tables providing country-level data for all indicators included in the Index.

World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database Online

The World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database (annual online subscription) contains time series data for the years 1960, 1965, 1970 and annually from 1975 to 2008 for around one hundred telecommunication/ICT statistics covering telephone network size and dimension, other services, quality of service, traffic, staff, tariffs, revenue and investment. For June update, data for 2008 are available for selected indicators such as main (fixed) telephone lines in operation, mobile cellular subscriptions, Internet users and Internet subscribers. Selected demographic, macroeconomic and broadcasting statistics are also included. Data for over 200 economies are available.
