In November 2018, ITU held its 10th annual academic conference titled “Machine Learning for a 5G Future.” Out of that conference emerged a dialogue between academics and standardization experts in machine learning in the communications networking industry.

The result is this report covering the impact of machine learning (ML) in 5G planning and deployment, ML in telecommunication networks, artificial intelligence, data management optimization, network applications of ML, and the social, legal and ethical aspects of ML. Fifty-seven authors share their insights on these topics, explore development methodologies for next-generation wireless ecosystems that use ML and big data, review ML applications for improving critical resource management decisions in 5G and cloud computing, how ML will affect employment, and more. Authors come from academia, government, and industry from around the world.
