Maximising availability of international connectivity in the Pacific

The international connectivity of small island developing states is vital to economic development. In the Asia-Pacific region, universal broadband connectivity would draw together the Pacific islands and allow them to participate more fully in the global economy. While Pacific island connectivity has improved since 2007, a focus on policy and regulatory frameworks, building more cables, universal access to ICT and the adoption of telecommunication applications could have a big impact socially and economically. Maximizing Availability of International Connectivity in the Pacific provides an overview of connectivity among the Pacific islands, showcases case studies in several of them — notably, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu — and provides recommendations for improving connectivity.
