New ITU Focus Group to hold first meeting in Austria

The new ITU Focus Group on ‘environmental efficiency for AI and other emerging technologies’will hold its first meeting in Vienna, Austria, 12 December 2019, hosted by Austria’s Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology.

The meeting will be preceded by an ITU forum on 11 December to discuss the environmental benefits of emerging technologies and their potential to support climate action.

It will be followed on 13 December by a meeting of the U4SSC Thematic Group developing a ‘U4SSC Index’ to offer a global view of the transition to Smart Sustainable Cities.

The meeting will present a first draft of the methodology to underlie the U4SSC Index, an index to build on the U4SSC Key Performance Indicators for Smart Sustainable Cities.

U4SSC (the United for Smart Sustainable Cities Initiative) is supported by 16 United Nations bodies, with the aim of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.

The new Focus Group will study environmental efficiency in the age of AI, increasing automation, and smart manufacturing. The group’s work is also expected to support ITU’s ongoing studies of the environmental requirements of IMT-2020 (5G) systems.

The group is open to all interested parties. It will lead a two-year consultation process to identify new aspects of environmental efficiency to benefit from ITU international standards.

The Focus Group aims to provide guidance on the environmentally efficient operation of emerging technologies, as well as the influence of these technologies on the environmental efficiency of the broader ICT ecosystem.

It will curate and analyze research into the relationship between emerging technologies and environmental efficiency. This analysis will conclude with the delivery of Technical Reports and specifications to benchmark best practices and describe pathways towards a standardized framework to assess environmental aspects of the adoption of emerging technologies.

The Focus Group will report to ITU-T Study Group 5 (Environment and circular economy).

ITU Focus Groups accelerate ITU studies in fields of growing strategic relevance to ITU membership. These groups bring together as many stakeholders as possible to support related standardization work in membership-driven ITU Study Groups.
