United 4 Smart Sustainable Cities

United 4 Smart Sustainable Cities

ITU and UNECE launched "United for Smart Sustainable Cities" (U4SSC) in May 2016 in response to the Sustainable Development Goal 11: "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable".

U4SSC is now an UN initiative supported by CBD, ECLAC, FAO, ITU, UNDP, UNECA, UNECE, UNESCO, UN Environment, UNEP-FI, UNFCCC,
UN-Habitat, UNIDO, UNU-EGOV, UN-Women and WMO.

U4SSC advocates for public policy to encourage the use of ICTs to facilitate and ease the transition to smart sustainable cities.

The U4SSC second meeting was held on 5 April 2017.

U4SSC is currently working on the following deliverables:

Advisory Board for SSC



    
An Advisory Board was created to review and refine the ITU-UNECE KPIs for smart sustainable cities.

This Advisory Board comprises officials from UN agencies, international experts and city representatives. 

The Advisory Board was launched on 18 May 2016 at the Forum on "Shaping smarter and more sustainable cities: striving for SDGs" in Rome, Italy.

KPIs on Smart Sustainable Cities

 

The U4SSC Initiative was created by 16 UN agencies and programmes, namely ITU and UNECE together with CBD, ECLAC, FAO, UNDP, UNECA, UNESCO, UN Environment, UNEP-FI, UNFCCC, UN-Habitat, UNIDO, UNU-EGOV, UN-Women and WMO. 

The U4SSC Initiative has developed a set of international key performance indicators (KPIs) for Smart sustainable cities (SSC) to establish the criteria to evaluate ICT´s contributions in making cities smarter and more sustainable, and to provide cities with the means for
self-assessments. 

The list of all the KPIs for SSC along with its collection methodology are contained in:​
