ITU Secretary-General


Doreen Bogdan-MartinDoreen Bogdan-Martin took office as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023.

With over three decades of leadership experience in global telecommunications policy, Ms. Bogdan-Martin has emphasized the need for digital transformation to achieve economic prosperity, job creation, skills development, gender equality, and socio-economic inclusion, as well as to build circular economies, reduce climate impact, and save lives. Her historic election by ITU Member States in S​eptember 2022 made her the first woman ever to head the ​1​60-year-old organization. Known for mobilizing innovative partnerships, she aims to promote meaningful connectivity, intensify cooperation to connect the unconnected, and strengthen the alignment of digital technologies with inclusive sustainable development.​​

WSIS Forum 2026

​​​"This year's WSIS marks a new chapter. With a renewed mandate through 2035, we enter the decade ahead with fresh momentum and a clear vision," said the ITU Secretary-General on the opening day of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum. "In a world where digital is everywhere, WSIS must rise to the challenges of a rapidly changing technological and geopolitical landscape."​

AI for Good Global Summit 2026

​"We can all start somewhere, whether it's upskilling ourselves or others, working on an AI security standard, or enacting a policy solution that safeguards people and our planet," said the ITU Secretary-General, in her keynote at the AI for Good Global Summit 2026. " If we get this right, AI will not replace human agency. It will amplify it," she added.​

Global Dialogue on AI Governance

​"Together with UNESCO, ITU has proudly coordinated the Joint Secretariat for this Dialogue and continues to mobilize UN-wide expertise through the Inter-Agency Working Group on AI," said the ITU Secretary-General, at the opening of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, at Geneva's Palexpo. "What gives the AI Dialogue its strength is the diversity of voices it brings together."​

5th National Communications Conference, Mozambique

In a keynote address at Mozambique's 5th National Communications Conference, the ITU Secretary-General cited the country's connectivity efforts, which she said " are helping President Chapo's vision of a Mozambique that is both meaningfully connected and future ready."​​

European Union Council of Ministers

At an EU Council of Ministers meeting in Luxembourg, the ITU Secretary-General engaged in discussions on strengthening cooperation between ITU and the European Union, particularly on AI, digital investments and resilience.​
