Call for papers open for new ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries

First special issue explores Artificial Intelligence in communications networks

Geneva, 08 June 2017

ITU is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the inaugural issue of the ITU Journal: ICT Discoveriesa special issue exploring the contributions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the performance and efficiency of communications networks. Submissions are being accepted until 28 August 2017.

Researchers are invited to propose novel applications of AI techniques to improve the performance and efficiency of communications infrastructure, systems and components, with a view to encouraging the creation of new services and ensuring optimal user experience.

This technical analysis will be accompanied by investigation of the legal and social dimensions of AI's influence on communications, exploring means to expand technical cooperation and ensure that advances in AI work to the benefit of digital inclusion.

ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries will publish original research on information and communication technologies (ICTs) technical developments and their policy and regulatory, economic, social and legal dimensions. It will share insight into the convergence that characterizes our interconnected world, matching research on technical innovation in ICT with analysis of associated transformations in business and society and the related complexities of governance in the digital era.

"ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries will draw great strength from ITU's unique public-private partnership of members and comprehensive field of interest," said ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao. "The journal will build bridges between disciplines, connect theory with application, and stimulate international dialogue on how information and communication technologies are redefining governance, business and society."

The scope of ICT Discoveries is a reflection of ITU's past and present, a neutral platform for countries, companies and academia to meet in the spirit of collaboration that drives common technological advance.

From the day of the telegraph, through its formative role in telecommunications, and in today's converged ICT environment, ITU has provided a neutral platform for ICT stakeholders to reach international agreement on technical and policy considerations of common global concern. Through these efforts, ITU brings cohesion to innovation in ICT.

The concept of ICT Discoveries was developed through ITU secretariat consultations with ITU Academia members in 2015 in Barcelona and 2016 in Bangkok.

Academia members participate in ITU expert groups alongside policymakers and industry-leading engineers and business strategists, contributing to the development of the international agreements that underpin the technical foundations of the Information Society.
