International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) and Welchman Keen organized a Training on “Protecting your Critical National
Infrastructure (CNI) from Cyber Threats and Attacks”.
In the last 10 years there has been
significant growth of attacks on critical national infrastructure with the
likes of Stuxnet, WannaCry, Red October, and many others. These are some of the
big attacks on CNI that had resulted in major disruptions to the national infrastructure
and economy at large. We also witnessed devastating effect on businesses in
2017 with the Petya and NotPetya ransomware attack, which was estimated at $10
billion in losses, hitting large organisations. While CNI industries must
consider cyber threats as a risk to their businesses, they need to look at
these risks from a broader perspective. Disruptions and failures can have a
far-reaching impact to the population and economy of the country.
This Training looked at cyber threats and challenges to the
critical national infrastructure and how to address these threats. An open discussion with all participants will
explore the related challenges, opportunities and lessons learned in the form
of an interactive discussion by the presenters and participants.
