The International Telecommunication Union, in partnership with the Pacific Islands Telecommunication Association, is organizing a mobile/digital application hackathon from 23-25 April 2020 in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The hackathon will be held at the Heritage Park Hotel and will precede the PITA 24th Annual General Meeting and Telecommunications Conference 2020. The participants will form teams of 3 - 5 people and build technology-based projects that address a current tourism challenge.

The winning projects will get an opportunity to present their solution at the PITA Annual General Meeting before the government and industry decision makers from the Pacific. Winners will be selected based upon the application functionality, innovation, accessibility, commercial potential and overall impact for the Pacific region.

The prime objective of the hackathon is to develop mobile/digital applications themed around tourism in the Pacific that can help address a current gap, challenge or need.

The hackathon also aims to

  • raise awareness amongst decision makers from government, industry and development agencies on the high priority that should be accorded to building digital skills and the accelerated development potential that such skills bring;
  • engender crowd sourcing and exchange of experiences with talents from the Pacific to identify and prioritise key gaps, challenges or need where digital technologies can be leveraged to enhance tourism in the Pacific;
  • strengthen the digital skills of talents in the Pacific to develop target applications for practical implementation; and
  • encourage girls and young women to take up ICT as a career.

Participants should be passionate software developers/designers/product managers, who are motivated to improve the tourism industry in the Pacific using digital technology. We highly encourage female participants to register. There is no age restriction to enter the hackathon.

All participants should register for the event by 10 March 2020.
