Dates: 20-21 March 2018: ITU Regional Workshop on ICT statistics for Africa organized by ITU in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies and the National Statistical Office (NSO) of Malawi with the support of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) in the city of Lilongwe.

Objective: Institutional and individual capacity building for a strengthening of countries’ capabilities to compile data in the ICT sector and have a better understanding of the IDI used in the annual Measuring the Information Society Report of the ITU

Number of Participants: 69 Participants from 24 African countries

Results /Impact: Strengthened capacity and awareness of the ICT Development Index (IDI) indicators, computation and timelines for data submission. This is expected to result in more accurate, complete, and timely submission of ICT data to ITU and a better measurement of ICT’s contribution, gaps and requirements for the region. Increased awareness and enrollment in the expert group activities (EGH EGTI) should result in more participation from Africa, both in the online forum and during face-to-face meetings in respect to the new indicators and the IDI. Member states were encouraged to establish legal and institutional frameworks for national coordination on ICT data, and set-up mechanisms and partnerships to conduct regular ICT surveys with a focus on advanced technologies, services and applications. This will address the persistent ICT demand side data gaps and challenges.
