Costa Rica Ministry of Health to launch an mHealth for Smoking Cessation

​​​​​​​​​​​​April 2013: Over four years, the joint Initiative aims to introduce mHealth interventions for NCDs into the national health systems of eight targeted countries.

The first country to officially participate in the mHealth Initiative for NCDs is Costa Rica. The Ministry of Health approached the WHO-ITU initiative with the aims of reducing the number of tobacco-related diseases in the country.

From January 2013, the mHealth Initiative has been working closely with Costa Rica to produce a mobile cessation program for smokers wanting to quit.

The project is currently being introduced into the country, and an initial run of the program will be fully operational in September 2013. This first stage of implementation will last for 6 months and will be regularly evaluated.

The Initiative will continue to work closely with relevant government departments in order to ensure the intervention development and implementation is done with their full working knowledge and understanding of the process.
