ITU and E-waste in Dominican Republic
ITU provided support to the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA) to support the development of a dedicated Regulation on E-Waste Management and Final Disposal (Decree 253-23) and to ensure the implementation of EPR for e-waste in Dominican Republic
- ITU – UNEP (2021 – 2023)
ITU and UNEP provided support to INDOTEL and MARENA to develop a dedicated Regulation on E-Waste Management and Final Disposal (Decree 253-23). A series of national consultations were held in 2021, including both public and private stakeholders, to define clear roles, duties and responsibilities of national stakeholders involved in the e-waste value chain. A draft e-waste regulation was developed following the feedback received during the consultations and was presented and discussed with key electrical and electronic equipment producers in the country. The draft of the e-waste regulation was finalized and validated in May 2022 during an event hosted by INDOTEL in Santo Domingo. The Regulation on E-Waste Management and Final Disposal (Decree 253-23) was then approved at ministerial level in 2023 and next steps include a national awareness campaign to sensitize consumers on the issue of e-waste and the legal framework for sound management of e-waste in Dominican Republic.
