Co-design and Validation Workshop on Postal-Service Led E-waste Reverse Logistics Pilot in Nigeria, 22 and 23 September 2026, Abuja, Nigeria

Background

Nigeria faces a growing e-waste challenge, driven by increasing domestic consumption of electrical and electronic equipment and the continued import of used devices. Although the country has strengthened its regulatory framework through the National Environmental (Electrical/Electronic Sector) Regulations and an Extended Producer Responsibility system, significant gaps remain in nationwide collection, reverse logistics, traceability and the environmentally sound management of collected equipment.

To help address these challenges, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), within the framework of the ITU–FCDO Digital Access Programme, are supporting the development of a postal service-led e-waste reverse logistics pilot in Nigeria. The proposed model explores how NIPOST’s nationwide postal infrastructure, collection routes, physical facilities and digital systems can be leveraged to collect, transport, aggregate and channel discarded ICT and electronic equipment to licensed recycling facilities, while supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s EPR system and creating a scalable model for sustainable e-waste management.

Workshop Objectives

  • Validate and refine the proposed design of the e-waste reverse logistics postal pilot in Nigeria.
  • Build a shared understanding of Nigeria’s Extended Producer Responsibility system and relevant e-waste legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Align NIPOST’s courier, route-mapping and fleet management systems with the operational requirements of e-waste reverse logistics.
  • Develop group recommendations on operational logistics, infrastructure, digital and institutional capacity, and EPR financing and sustainability.
  • Agree on priority actions, responsibilities and indicative timelines to move the pilot towards implementation.
