Background:
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), supports a wide range of initiatives, including e-waste policy development. With the generous contribution from the Government of Australia - DITRDCSA, this activity was organized under the project titled ‘Creating a Circular Economy for Electronics and Electricals in Mongolia’.
In Mongolia, 20,000 tonnes of e-waste are generated each year, while the management of this waste stream is currently not regulated. The Government of Mongolia is seeking to address this gap by exploring policy and regulatory measures to ensure effective management and resource recovery. In this regard, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) and the Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) are receiving technical assistance through the ITU project to develop an understanding of the material flows, mapping of the stakeholders and providing recommendations on regulatory approaches.
Stakeholder
Consultation Workshop
Following the project inception meeting held in July 2025, a capacity-building and stakeholder consultation workshop was organized to enhance knowledge and awareness about this waste stream and the extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy principle, which is widely applied for the management of this waste stream. Public and private sector stakeholders were invited to participate in the consultation, share their perspectives and contribute to shaping the policy way forward.
