E-waste Strategy Stakeholder Consultation Workshop – 24 and 25 October 2022, Niamey, Niger

Background

ITU has been providing support to the Ministère de la Poste et des Nouvelles Technologies de l'Information to develop a national e-waste strategy. The strategy will be Niger's first comprehensive document focused on e-waste management. Like many other countries dealing with the e-waste challenge, Niger lacks a formal e-waste collection, transportation, and disposal system. The strategy aims to create a future regulatory framework, reduce the volume of e-waste requiring disposal, and adopt environmentally sound practices for the final disposal of e-waste.

Objectives

The consultation workshop will take place over two days, gathering a core group of relevant national and local stakeholders. The workshop objectives are as follows:

  • To present key policy principles that could be included in the national e-waste strategy for Niger.
  • To introduce private sector participants (producers such as importer, distributors, and manufacturers, etc.) to basics and key elements of e-waste and circular economy.
  • To identify a common vision and key objectives of the e-waste strategy.
  • To identify best practices including the possible financing mechanisms, roles and responsibility, and barriers to be overcome to enhance public-private sector cooperation and to achieve optimal management of e-waste in the future.
