Government Consultation Workshop on the National E-waste Management Policy in Burundi, 9-10 June 2021, Bujumbura, Burundi

Background
Burundi developed a national policy for e-waste management, which was the first comprehensive policy on the topic in the country, aiming at an effective, equitable, and sustainable system that protected both human health and the environment while promoting socio-economic development.

 The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) provided technical assistance to the Government of Burundi via the Ministère de la Communication, des Technologies de l’Information et des Médias (MCTIM) and the Agence de Régulation et Contrôle des Télécommunications (ARCT) by providing technical expertise and strengthening Burundi’s national capacity for e-waste management.

A series of in-depth consultations on the development of Burundi’s national e-waste management policy was organized in 2021 to define strategies related to the roles, duties, and responsibilities of actors involved in the e-waste value chain. This government consultation marked the first step of the consultation process, focusing on awareness-raising, stakeholder mapping, and endorsing a participatory approach.

Objectives

The workshop brought together relevant stakeholders from the public sector to consult towards the development of a national e-waste management policy for Burundi. The objectives of this initial consultation included:

    • Raising awareness among stakeholders about e-waste issues and the process of developing an e-waste management policy, and obtain their opinions and recommendations on the subject;
    • Identifying and mapping stakeholders involved in the operation and regulation of e-waste management activities in Burundi;
    • Ensuring the active involvement of participants in the successive stages of the process.
