Green ICT Guides, Strategies and Policies

Through our comprehensive suite of Green ICT Guides and Capacity Building materials, ITU supports countries in their journey towards a green digital future. Our approach is rooted in collaboration and knowledge-sharing. By providing tools, resources, and capacity building, we empower governments, the ICT sector, and individuals to make informed decisions that feed into both corporate and national strategies and policies to drive positive environmental impact. Under the Green GovStack initiative, ITU, World Bank, and GIZ collaborated on a ‘Green Data Centers’ guide and e-learning course. This comprehensive resource equips practitioners with essential strategies across six key areas, facilitating the greening of data centers and fostering sustainable digital transformation. This guidance aids in managing climate risks and minimising environmental impacts from digital infrastructure.
As part of the Green GovStack initiative, ITU created a 'Circular and Sustainable Public Procurement Guide for ICTs' and an e-learning course, which addresses the full life-cycle of ICTs. These resources outline sustainable and circular procurement processes, aligning with Recommendation ITU-T L.1061, and serve as a practical companion to key concepts.
As part of the Women's Entrepreneurship Accelerator initiative, ITU launched an e-learning course on 'Green and Digital Entrepreneurship for Women'. This empowering initiative is tailored for start-up and scale-up women entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills to thrive in the digital age while promoting environmental sustainability. It is designed to guide participants through the concepts and benefits of green business, green and circular economy, and sustainability concepts, while also exploring digital green concepts, how to green supply chains, and green finance.
ITU's commitment to green IT extends to governmental initiatives. Through collaborations with the governments of Germany and Estonia, alongside the Digital Impact Alliance, ITU launched the Green GovStack initiative. This framework empowers national governments to establish interoperable, secure, and reusable IT infrastructure while minimizing environmental impact. This initiative ensures that the capabilities of GovStack align with environmental objectives, driving sustainable development on a global scale.
