ICT technologies to Mitigate the Effects of Earthquakes and Tsunamis

​The Workshop on Technologies to Mitigate the Effects of Earthquakes and Tsunamis  took place in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from 12 to 13 September 2016.  The event was jointly organized with INICTEL-UNI from Perú, the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society of Ecuador and the ITU. 

The main purpose of the workshop was to raise awareness on the importance of Early warning and alerting systems for disaster risk reduction and disaster management. An emphasis was made on setting up Early Warning Broadcasting Systems for alerting populations on Tsunami warnings and/or any other type of natural hazards. Discussions on how to incorporate EWBS into the current analog to digital transition took place and different prototipes were demonstrated and displayed during the event.

The workshop was attended by over 100 participants from different national humanitarian agencies, including remote participation from Chile and Perú, such as firefighters, red cross, civil defense as well as the National Secretariat for disaster risk reduction of Ecuador, the National Security Integrated Service - ECU 911-, the Pacific Tsunami warning Center (remote participation) among others.
