Thematic Pavilions at ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 to address urgent global ICT challenges

Themes include environmental issues, digital health and social exclusion

Geneva, 24 September 2009 — Leading organizations, manufacturers and service providers will collaborate on innovative Thematic Pavilions at ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 (Geneva, 5-9 October) to showcase solutions which address today’s key global ICT issues. The Pavilions, which will be located on the show floor alongside some of the industry’s top names, allow groups to share stand space with their peers and join the global debate.

Each Pavilion will feature a combination of Exhibition Space showcasing new technologies; Presentation Space where experts can share new information; and Collaborative Space, where leaders will meet to share views on what needs to be done to address each issue.

"This will be the first time we have organized Thematic Pavilions for our events. The themes we are seeing within these Pavilions address specifics areas and closely mirror the overall theme of ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009, ‘Open Networks - Connected Minds,’ said Dr Hamadoun Touré, ITU Secretary-General. "We look forward to exploring some of the vital and innovative work being carried out in these key fields."

Thematic Pavilions provide an ideal platform to showcase ICT solutions designed to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges, such as environmental issues, global health and social exclusion. Bridging both public and private sectors, they will also provide a platform for key decision makers to discuss progress to date and agree workable solutions for moving forward.

This year’s new Thematic Pavilions complement around 25 National and Regional Pavilions from across the globe.

"UNESCO’s Thematic Pavilion will be a showcase for our action and that of our partners in empowering persons with disabilities through effective utilization of ICTs," said Mr Abdul Waheed Khan, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO. "ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 provides a great opportunity to promote the notion of knowledge societies where everybody can create, access, use and share information and knowledge, as well as equally benefit and contribute to societal development."
