Global Symposium for Regulators and ITU Global Industry Leaders Forum

Geneva, 4 November 2009 — ITU’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) and Global Industry Leaders Forum (GILF) will play a key role in shaping tomorrow’s markets for information and communication technologies and services.

With the theme ‘Hands On or Hands Off?’, this year’s focus is on identifying the right approaches governments and regulators can adopt to suit each country’s market. At a time when broadband stimulus packages are key to many countries’ attempts to counter the global economic crisis, this event brings together top decision makers from across the ICT industry to debate critical issues including:

  • Revenue sharing in a converged environment
  • Keeping pace with a fast-changing mix of technologies and services
  • Maintaining regulatory effectiveness in today’s high-value converged markets
  • Network neutrality: a call for keeping the Internet open?

Attendees include:

  • Kamal Shehadi, Chairman and CEO of TRA Lebanon
  • Saad Al Barrak, CEO of Zain Group
  • Hamadoun Touré, ITU Secretary-General
  • Sami Al Basheer Al Morshid, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau
  • Over 300 senior policy-makers from the international ICT regulatory community, the private sector and regional and international organizations
  • Journalists are urged to accredit now for this key event. Please note that formal accreditation is essential for media and industry analysts wishing to participate in this event onsite and / or to gain access to online media materials.

    Opening ceremony: Monday 9 November 09:00-10:00; doors close 08:45 sharp.

    Opening press conference: Monday 9 November 12:30-13:15

    Media may attend all day 9 November & morning session on 10 November

    Media accreditation

    Journalists and industry analysts are urged to pre-register to avoid long queues and possible delays. Media badges may be collected from 08:00 – 22:00 Sunday 8 November, from 07:00 – 18:00 Monday 9 November, and from 08:00 Tuesday 10 November. For security reasons there will be strictly no admittance to the event without a badge.

    Journalists and analysts opting to accredit onsite must bring with them all supporting documentation as required in the formal accreditation procedures outlined at: www.itu.int/net/newsroom/GSR/2009/accreditation/index.aspx.

    Journalists and industry analysts already accredited for the recent ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 event in Geneva, Switzerland, will be automatically accredited for this event, and need only register to receive their new username and password.

    Officially-recognized formal proof of identity with photo (such as a passport or national identity card) will be required when collecting media badges.
