Plenipotentiary Conference Elects 46 Member States to Council
Radio Regulations Board Members Also
Elected
Marrakesh, 3 October 2002 —
The Plenipotentiary Conference has elected 46 Member States to the ITU Council,
which will represent the total membership of 189 Member States in the four-year
interval between Plenipotentiary Conferences. The Plenipotentiary Conference
also elected 12 members to the Radio Regulations Board (RRB).
The ITU Council’s role is to ensure that the Union's activities, policies
and strategies fully respond to today's dynamic, rapidly changing
telecommunication environment. It is also responsible for coordinating work
programmes, approving budgets and controlling finances while ensuring the Union
operates effectively and efficently.
Each of the five regions is entitled to a designated number of seats. The
countries elected are:

Americas (8 seats) : |
Canada, United States, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela,
Suriname |

Western Europe (8 seats) : |
Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, France, Norway, Turkey, Italy |
|
Eastern Europe (5 seats) : |
Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Czech Republic |
|
Africa (13 seats) : |
Morocco, Cameroon, South Africa, Algeria, Kenya, Egypt, Senegal,
Tunisia, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Ghana |

Asia and Australasia (12 seats) : |
India, China, Thailand, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia,
Japan, Pakistan, Australia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Islamic Republic of Iran |
First time Council members include, Ghana, Norway and Suriname. The
Islamic Republic of Iran last served on Council in 1982 and Uganda in 1973,
whereas Turkey was last a Member of Council in 1959.

The 12 members elected to the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) are:

The duties of these members include approving the technical criteria used by
the Radiocommunication Bureau in the application of the Radio Regulations. They
also consider reports on cases of harmful radio frequency interference on earth
and in space and formulate recommendations for resolution of such interference.
