AI-driven autonomous urban systems in Valencia, Spain

As cities seek to move from isolated pilots to coordinated autonomous services, Valencia offers a practical example of phased, city-wide implementation. This U4SSC case study examines how the city combines AI, IoT, sensors and predictive analytics across mobility, waste management, environmental monitoring and public safety. Featured applications include electric autonomous buses, sensor-equipped waste bins and autonomous collection vehicles, drones supporting surveillance and emergency response, and app-based smart parking. Beginning with pilots in 2019 and scaling between 2021 and 2023, Valencia integrated these systems into centralised urban management while using public outreach, stakeholder engagement and vendor partnerships to address technical and acceptance challenges. Reported outcomes include a roughly 30 per cent reduction in waste-collection costs, 40 per cent less time spent searching for parking, 15 per cent shorter commutes, a 20 per cent reduction in public-transport emissions and 25 per cent faster emergency response. The case underlines that effective autonomy depends on human oversight, cybersecurity, equitable access and strong data-driven governance.
