National E-waste Management Strategy for Botswana
In this issue
Botswana sees rapid growth in the consumption and disposal of ICT equipment, leading to rising e waste volumes that pose increasing environmental and public health risks. The Botswana Integrated Waste Management Policy (2021) highlights the absence of dedicated regulation, low public awareness, and limited infrastructure for collection and recycling as key national gaps, a concern reiterated by the Botswana National E waste Monitor (2024), which estimates annual generation at over 13,000 tonnes. In response, the Government of Botswana, with support from ITU and UNEP, has developed this National E waste Management Strategy to strengthen environmentally sound management of e waste, advance circular economy practices, and enable investment and innovation through an improved regulatory environment.
