Cable TV deserves a new definition. No longer confined to straightforward television services, it now encompasses services such as video-on-demand, internet access, cloud storage, and Internet-of-Things applications such as smart metering at home. These changes have been carried along on a wave of innovation and ICT convergence, and the waves continue to break. In The Future of Cable TV: Trends and Implications, the ITU provides an overview of the improvements needed in cables to deliver connected TV, and developments on which cable TV operators can capitalise, such as virtual reality, multi-service and multi-platform TV, and ultra-high-definition TV. There will also, however, be regulatory changes in setting new parameters for a changing industry. The future of cable TV will look vastly different to its past.
