AI ambition to action: The AI for Good Lab initiative 

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched a new global initiative to help developing and emerging economies harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI).

The AI for Good Lab initiative, announced on 8 July at ITU’s annual AI for Good Global Summit, focuses on building skills, infrastructure, and policy foundations required for long-term AI success. 

Building on AI for Good Sandbox initiatives with Cameroon, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Peru, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as the African Telecommunications Union, this new initiative aims to bring together an ecosystem approach to scale local projects.

The AI for Good Lab aims to help developing countries accelerate locally relevant AI solutions based on international standards. Countries can build datasets based on local contexts, a vital asset in training AI models for priority sectors such as health, agriculture, education and mobility.

In-country projects will also develop local compute infrastructure and share locally adapted, open-weight AI models that governments, the private sector, start-ups and academia can reuse at lower cost. 

Driving national AI transformation 

The AI for Good Lab is built around three interconnected priorities to support countries at every stage of their AI journey. 

• AI Readiness and Policy support helps governments assess national capabilities, identify gaps, and develop strategies for AI adoption. Through readiness assessments, policy guidance, and capacity-building workshops, countries can better understand the investments and policies needed to unlock AI’s potential. 
• AI Skills Development support aims to build a strong and inclusive talent pipeline. Through initiatives such as the AI Skills Coalition, Innovation Factory, AI and Robotics programmes, hackathons, and machine learning (AI/ML) challenges, the AI for Good Lab will help equip youth, professionals, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and public-sector leaders with the skills needed for AI innovation. 
• Public AI Infrastructure support provides the technical foundations required for innovation. With the open datasets, compute resources and open-source toolkits offered by the AI for Good Sandbox, countries can experiment with AI, validate new solutions and take actions aligned with ITU standards. 

Integrated support in the three areas is designed to help countries move beyond isolated pilot projects toward sustainable AI ecosystems capable of delivering long-term impact. 

It also strengthens ITU’s ability to respond to growing demand for AI solutions aligned with international standards and global development priorities. 

Turning AI potential into development impact 

By combining policy support, standards, workforce development and access to infrastructure, the initiative seeks to ensure that AI drives sustainable development and prosperity for everyone, rather than becoming a new source of inequality. 

ITU’s support can help give developing countries a clearer institutional pathway to establish their public AI Infrastructure. 

Supporting innovators, governments, and future leaders 

The AI for Good Lab is designed to benefit a broad range of stakeholders. 

Researchers and academic institutions will gain opportunities to collaborate on cutting-edge AI research. Students and young innovators will create AI and robotics solutions for real-world problems. 

Start-ups and entrepreneurs will receive targeted support through programmes such as the AI Innovation Factory and accelerator initiatives. 

Governments, regulators, and policymakers will be able to test new AI solutions in sandbox environments and leverage AI readiness assessments and policy toolkits to enhance national strategies, evaluate policy options, and build institutional capacity. 

Building AI capacity worldwide 

The AI for Good Lab will work closely with national governments and ITU’s regional offices to establish local and regional hubs, share best practices, and promote knowledge exchange across borders. 

Conferences and workshops, training programmes, innovation challenges and collaborative projects under the initiative will help countries build the foundations needed to thrive in the AI era.
