Spectrum and Satellites orbits management

The ITU Radiocommunication Sector plays a vital role in the global management of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits, managing the detailed coordination and recording procedures for space systems and earth stations. 

This work is essential in responding to the demand from services such as fixed, mobile, broadcasting, amateur, space research, emergency telecommunications, meteorology, global positioning systems, environmental monitoring and communication services. 

The Sector processes and publishes data and examines frequency assignment notices submitted by administrations for inclusion in the formal coordination procedures or recording in the Master International Frequency Register. It also seeks means to conserve spectrum and ensure flexibility for future expansion and new technological developments.

The Sector’s Study Groups develop the technical bases for decisions taken at World Radiocommunication Conferences and develop global standards (Recommendations), Reports and Handbooks on radiocommunication matters.

More than 5 000 specialists, from administrations, the telecommunications industry as a whole and academic organizations throughout the world, participate in the work of the Study Groups on topics such as efficient management and use of the spectrum/orbit resource, radio systems characteristics and performance, spectrum monitoring and emergency radiocommunications for public protection and disaster relief.
