The globally recognized tech event for governments, corporates and small/medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), ITU Telecom World 2017 has today opened the accreditation process for media wishing to join the event. Taking place from 25-28 September in Busan, Republic of Korea – the pioneering "smart" city – the event will focus on smart digital transformation and innovation, and the global opportunities these offer.

ITU Telecom World 2017 combines an international tech exhibition, a forum for sharing knowledge, a networking hub for corporates, governments and SMEs and the influential ITU Telecom World Awards programme. It provides a unique international platform that brings together developed and emerging markets, public and private sector leaders, and industry representatives from across the entire information and communication technology (ICT) ecosystem. Key highlights include:

Leadership Summit & Forum: This key element of the ITU Telecom World 2017 begins with the top-level Leadership Summit, featuring globally recognized influential speakers from the public and private sectors. Among other future-focused topics, they will explore different visions of "smart" societies and debate the challenges of building a resilient digital future. Forum sessions will then explore industry-essential topics including: the role of data in smart digital transformation, the best ways to achieve meaningful digital inclusion and increase digital literacy, and the transformation of telecom operators. Hear a wide range of perspectives from change-making companies and organizations including GSMA, Ernst & Young, Etisalat, ICANN, Nokia, Swisscom and World Bank.

International Exhibition: Digital solutions and investment opportunities from countries and companies around the world, representing emerging and developed markets alike, plus SMEs, will be showcased. This is also a valuable opportunity for prospective sellers to connect with buyers – from governments and corporates – across the globe. A dedicated programme will help match investors with innovative solutions. Broadband, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be just some of the innovative enabling technologies on display; look out for showcases in areas such as machine learning, smart sensors, remote monitoring and diagnosis, local content, payment solutions and more. Leading showfloor and sponsoring companies and countries participating include South Africa, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, KT Corporation, SK telecom and LS telcom.

ITU Telecom World Awards:  Don't miss the prestigious ITU Telecom World Awards ceremony, recognizing innovative ICT-based solutions with real social impact, developed by SMEs, governments and larger corporate initiatives alike. All ITU Telecom World 2017 exhibitors and sponsors are eligible to enter; SMEs may also enter with an application fee that includes a free exhibition pass and full access to the SME programme of workshops, targeted networking, capacity-building and pitching sessions.

ITU-wide agenda: ITU Sectors will be fully represented both in the exhibition and throughout the event. ITU's Development Sector (ITU-D), which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, will present the work done with its members to accelerate digital inclusion and catalyse digital transformation, while building innovation capacity towards realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

ITU's Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) will showcase topics related to International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) and 5G, satellite communications and broadcasting, and will host debates on such topics as spectrum management and its role in our smart digital transformation, exploring how countries are advancing in the implementation of the outcomes of World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15) and looking at what issues will be key for WRC-19.

Within its Smart ABC programme, ITU's Standardization Sector (ITU-T) will showcase smart technologies, specifically Smart AI, Smart Banking and Smart Cities, as well as host meetings of leading decision-makers in these fields. Programme debates will cover areas such as 'Fintech and Smart Cities', exploring how smart banking can provide the operational key to making smart cities work; 'AI and Fintech', exploring how the power of AI can be applied to financial technologies; and 'The use of AI in Smart Cities', exploring how smart cities can leverage AI's beyond-human capability of analysing all kinds of data surrounding urban planning.

The ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries will be officially launched at a celebratory ceremony, followed by a presentation and discussion of selected papers from its first special issue on "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Communication Networks and Services".

The event will also host the Young ICT Leaders Forum 2017 – an annual event and a platform for young people from across the world to come together, share their ideas, insights and broaden knowledge of cutting-edge ICT innovations and developments. It also provides a forum where they can pursue career and business opportunities, linking up with a network of professionals and experts as well as taking part in a capacity building programme.
