Duncan works in the International Vehicle Standards Division within the UK government’s Department for Transport.
He was the main author of the Department’s recent review of regulations for driverless cars and other automated vehicle technologies, and is currently involved in drafting a forthcoming Code of Practice for testing of driverless vehicles on UK public roads. His work at the Department also includes development of regulations to govern camera monitor systems and crash safety, as well as being involved in the SHARP safety helmet programme – providing independent consumer information on the safety of motorcycle helmets.
Duncan is a mechanical engineer with over 25 years’ experience. He started his career at Ford Motor Company where he worked on 2-stroke, lean burn and direct injection engine technologies and exhaust after-treatment systems. Since then he has worked as a transport policy advisor for the UK government’s Sustainable Development Commission, publishing a report examining the potential for use of information communications technology to improve transport sustainability, and as a transport consultant for Ricardo-AEA, covering all modes of transport and leading projects for the European Commission. Duncan joined the Department for Transport in April 2014.
